This six-week immersion course is designed for physicians who desire to expand their guidance and impact as a leader in physician wellness initiatives within their organization or institution. 

Each week is composed of a combination of focused lectures and assignments designed to help participants cultivate expertise as a leader in physician well-being within organizations. 

The pinnacle of the program is a guided six-week capstone project that promotes active learning and demonstration of foundational principles. The capstone project takes physicians step by step through the process of creating a physician wellness program that is customized for their unique organization. Features of the capstone project include:

  • Mapping the current situation with a clarity of needs, interests and available resources
  • Identifying the ideal program, customized to each unique environment including current gaps and needs for success 
  • Strategically identifying stakeholders and developing skills to foster success despite potential differences of interests 
  • Skillfully creating a culture of psychological safety 
  • Aligning values of all interested parties to promote a culture of wellness
  • Developing details of the structure of program, multiple aspects of the pitch and factors that impact alignment 
  • Optimizing a current chief wellness program, if relevant 
  • Integrating the role of physician leadership in multiple settings 
  •  

Educational Objectives

Cultivate leadership skills  to direct physician wellness efforts.

 

Demonstrate a solid foundation of knowledge of the evidence-based factors that promote and limit physician well-being.

Develop strategic plans to create, manage and sustain physician well-being programs for their current or future organizations.

Utilize skills to promote the alignment of interests between physicians,  healthcare executives and other parties.

Act as a local expert and resource for on-going program assessment and development.

Alicia Kowalski, MD

Alicia Kowalski, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist in Houston, Texas. Driven by her passion for supporting colleagues in professional fulfillment and career sustainability, she leads wellness efforts and serves as the interim Director of Faculty and Academic Wellness at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. In this role, she helps physicians develop skills for improving wellness and managing burnout, and partners with other institutional leaders to establish a platform to support employee well-being.

In her role at IPW, Dr. Kowalski addresses a range of topics critical to leading institutional wellness efforts including models for promoting professional well-being and for establishing an institutional culture of resilience; interventions for developing shared responsibility of the institution and the individual; and guidance for impacting leadership and developing institutional plans.

About Dr. Kathy Stepien

Dr. Stepien is all about physician wellness. As a busy pediatrician, physician coach and mom, she understands what it is like to be a woman in medicine.

In 2016, she founded The Institute for Physician Wellness and has supported thousands of physicians across the US and Canada on their path to well-being. 

When she is not working, you may find her out hiking with her 2 teenage sons and her new pandemic puppy.
